Kindle or Nook?

I did it. I broke down and bought myself an eReader. Skeptic to Believer in the amount of time it took to download a free copy of Pride and Prejudice...Umm, like 20 seconds! Awesome, amazing, and soooo cool.

A lot of women are tempted by chocolate. Not me; I'm allergic. Books are my vice. Let's just say the "man cave" never came to fruition. But my hubby will be celebrating now. No more bookcases. I'll be holding my entire library in the palm of my hand.

Don't get me wrong; I still love paper books. Always. But 'tis the season for a grown up gadget.

So, which eReader was it? The Kindle or Nook? I researched and read reviews for hours. I held them and even smelled them. (Odorless! Which is probably a good thing).

In the end I chose the Nook. Ohhhhh, how I wanted the Kindle! It was lighter (by 2ounces) and fit in my purse. I just liked it. But, the Nook had one major advantage.....drum roll......I could check out library books. That rocks! And I can purchase ebooks from other companies, not just Barnes & Noble. Whereas, with the Kindle you can only purchase from Amazon.

I love my Nook! I'm reading several books at the same time, and they're always together. I spent the extra $50 for the 3G version and can download books or search Google anytime, anywhere. Way, way worth it. I searched for "free" books today, and there were 183,000 title to choose from. Insane.

'Tis the Season. And I'm soooo happy!

  1. Having the same mental debate currently.

I have had a Kindle Fire for about 3 months, my Grandma gave it to me because she got a newer version of the Kindle Fire and, while the Kindle Fire offers a good reading experience, it is not designed specifically for reading and more harmful on your eyes then the Kindles/Nooks made for reading.

So my Mom has promised me the Kindle/Nook of my choice on my birthday (May 1st.) So far, I am leaning towards the Kindle Paperwhite because it is has the same features as the Nook Glowlight, but its average review is 4.5 stars while the Glowlight is 3.

Another argument is that the Nook offers built-in WiFi and multiple downloadable sources not just Amazon. And while it is convenient for everything to be tied in to one neat package, their's multiple books on Amazon I have bought I could've easily gotten for free. Sigh...

I think I would pick the Nook Glowlight in a heartbeat if it wasn't for 30% of the reviews being 1-star and for the "Glowing Hole" problem.

    1. Now that I've seen all the latest options, and especially now that I can check out library books (at least in my neck of the woods) for the Amazon ebook format, I think I'd go with the Kindle paperwhite. I have found it so much easier to find books in specific genres at Amazon. I still have my old, old Nook. It is great on the eyes. But, I enjoy looking for books on Amazon more so than at Barnes N Noble website. There are more reviews and it seems to be organized better.

And even though I don't have a backlight on my old Nook, it really hasn't been an issue. Once in a while I hook my book light onto the edge, and that works just great. But if I was going to update at this point, I think I'd try the Paperwhite. :) Good luck! Let me know what you end up with and if you like it.
